What is your primary product or service?
Our main service is doing complete home inspections in Memphis, however we also do commercial property inspections. We are one of the only home inspection services in the Memphis area that is certified to do both.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
My background is actually in technology, which I think gives me an edge when it comes to providing quality home inspections. The industry is evolving to include more technology in inspections. Some of the tools, like thermal imaging cameras allow home inspectors to see more than they can with the naked eye. I like to implement these new technologies in my inspection process. I've done technology work for HVAC companies and have worked as a commercial roof inspector. This background comes in handy when it comes to providing quality home inspections.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
One thing that sets me apart is my high-quality reports, which can be viewed online and are easy to navigate. I take hundreds of photos on every inspection. Where most inspectors only give you a short summary of the defects they found, my reports give you a complete look at your home and its systems.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Right now, I'm mostly a solo entrepreneur, at least when it comes to home inspections. I do work with additional specialized consultants and contracted experts on commercial inspections though. However, I'm in talks to take my brand to new areas. The Upchurch name is quite strong regionally. Right now, my focus is on providing the best possible inspections to the areas I serve in Tennessee, but I may expand my own territory south into Mississippi in the next year.
Which areas do you service?
I serve most of South West Tennessee, including Memphis and Shelby County, Tipton County, and Fayette County.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
We are a family-owned operation, with me doing most of day to day operations myself. My incredible wife does help with my bookings, though, and when it comes to commercial inspections, some of the extended family gets involved. I'd say if you've lived in Memphis any length of time, you probably know my family.
What are your hours of operation?
You can schedule an inspection, right on my website, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And, I do work 7 days a week, as I try to make it convenient for my clients to schedule their inspections at the time that works best from them.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
The best compliment someone can give me is that I did a thorough job. My hope is that my inspection helps reveal things about the home they're buying that maybe wasn't obvious at first glance. A lot of times, this helps my clients in the negotiation process and saves them far more money than they spent on my services.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
I believe it was Gandhi that said, "be the change you wish to see in the world". I try to do this every day, with every interaction I have with my clients. From the moment they schedule an appointment, I keep them informed of the process, and treat every person with the same compassion and respect I would expect for my own home.
